Podmailer is a new free P2P file transfer service which promises to let you transmit files of any size using just your email program. For example sending the full quality video footage of your recent wedding to your ex. That kind of thing. It’s not a totally new idea, although what makes this one different is that it’s based on Amazon’s new S3 service, so it should scale nicely with demand. Just download the Mac or PC client and off you go. Apparently.
Let’s say you want to send a big file to your friend John. Well, instead of attaching the real big file to the e-mail you are writing, Podmailer sends only a small file which references the real one. This small file is called a podmail (.zed). Upon receiving your e-mail, John opens this podmail (.zed) with Podmailer, and the transfer of the real big file starts directly between John’s computer and yours.
