Poo Wi-Fi – scoop the poop, get free WiFi…brilliant!

There are no words to explain how awesome this clever pilot project for Mexican Internet company Terra could be, if it was rolled out worldwide in earnest. The Poo WiFi system lets people exchange scooped up dog poo for WiFi minutes via an artfully designed park wireless LAN.

That’s right, if you’re walking your pooch in the park, you can now gather up it’s…ahem…little leavings…and exchange them for some free Internet minutes on your tablet, smartphone or computer. And the best thing ever? The bigger the dog, the more minutes you’re likely to be able to get…because it’s all worked out by weight. Awesome!!

Just gather up the remains of Rover’s lunch in the usual plastic bag or whatever, wander over to a nearby machine and drop it in. The dial will let you know how much time you get for your…er…deposit. What’s more it’s a great way to be civic minded and give WiFi to the world for free, even if you don’t need to use it yourself.

The idea is clearly a clever bit of marketing by Terra, but even so, what a great idea. Can you imagine pockets of these little things littered (sorry!) around the city, encouraging a clean up mentality by giving something valuable back in return? It’s gamification at its finest.

For now though, we’ll just have to sit back and enjoy the concept, and wait for some shrewd entrepreneur to come up with a 4G version which also gives free WiFi for picking up rubbish or whatever. Brilliant.
