It’s hard not to feel some sympathy for the entertainment industry as they flail around trying to stay up to date with technologies designed to deliver their content free to anyone who wants it. They sue this company, shut down that operation, lobby governments and buy political friends, and still they’re always at least five steps behind the curve. It’s a war all right, with no end in sight. Take this new free movie viewing service for instance.
Popcorn In Your Browser is such a beautifully simple idea, executed so exquisitely that it’s actually a work of art. Take one spoon full of fully seeded BitTorrent movies, mix in with a dash of very clever web browser technology, and you’ve basically got an instant, on demand service for streaming any movie you want into your web browser in seconds. No downloads, no plugins, no hassle. Yes, it’s that scary.
The movie studios are still focusing their attention on shutting down sites like the Pirate Bay and KickAss Torrents, but meanwhile these new services pop up like mushrooms to take their place. Again and again. Whac-a-Mole, only with lawyers chasing geeks, Keystone Cops style.
Anyway, we all know by now how this particular story is going to end. The domain will be shut down, copies will spring up under a welter of different domains registered across the world (just like the increasingly irrelevant Pirate Bay) and off we trot again. Wash, rinse, repeat.
You know you’re not supposed to talk about this stuff publicly…
