Ampoids Portable Amp and Speaker – curiously strong sound

portable amp and speaker tin

I have seen a lot of things created from an Altoids tin. First aid kits, bug out kits, emergency get away kits, there’s clearly some sort of a kit meme with this little box. But this project takes the cake. The Ampoids Portable Amp and Speaker is handmade with love from an Altoids tin.

Most people are familiar with the decidedly not candy breath mint, and the actual tin that they come in. But when you pull this particular tin out, you can expose people to a blast of music instead of fresh breath. The speaker/amp is made from the tin, a speaker, battery and the assorted electronic parts. Meaning that with a little time and effort you could probably do this yourself (step one, buy Altoids. Step two, dump mints in trash because they burn).

It is powered by a 9v battery and if it dies, you’ll have to change it yourself which means carefully opening this thing up and doing some very careful surgery, since there’s no easy access hatch for the task. It connects via an included patch cable to any standard headphone jack. The Portable Amp and Speaker is $30. Yes it is designed for guitarists, but hey we music lovers deserve a chance too, right?
