Project Sunroof – how much will solar power really save you?

Project Sunroof map

Switching your home to solar power is a costly endeavor but you stand to save a lot from making the change. Not to mention how much better it is for the planet as a whole. Still, it would be terrible to spend all that money only to find out that you don’t actually get enough sun to make it worth it. Check out Project Sunroof, the new Google program that gives you the data on moving to solar power for your home.

This project, which is fairly early in development, uses the data it has collected from Google Maps to help calculate how much sun you’ll actually get during the year (on average). It also uses readily available energy costs to give an idea of how much you can save if you decide to move forward with the change.

Project Sunroof estimate

Everything it puts out are only estimates but it’s a solid first step in deciding if solar energy is right for you or not. Project Sunroof isn’t available everywhere yet and only a few cities have samples available, however, they’re working on more locations.
