Bicycle theft is big business. Thanks to the easy availability of tools like battery power angle grinders, even the most carefully secured bike can be stolen in minutes. Now, thanks to Proteus, a new material developed in the U.K. and Europe, these cut and grab days may be over for good. The team behind the new wonder material have shown that while a 10mm military grade armoured steel plate could be cut through by an angle grinder in 20 seconds, the Proteus sheet just couldn’t be cut at all. All because of a genius application of relatively simple technology.
The secret behind the new stuff is a composite of hard ceramic spheres and aluminium foam, which reacts so strongly to the vibrations of an angle grinder, that it literally wears away the disc before it can penetrate to any degree.
“In the case of an angle grinder attack, vibrations of the disc, manifested as contact pressure oscillations, coupled with the abrasive action of ceramic particles resulted in extraordinary cutting resistance, consistent with a non-cuttable material. The waterjet cutter was rendered equally ineffective by the curvature of the spheres…”
As the above image shows, the discs wears away instead of cutting. Miraculous material indeed. Bicycle lovers of the world unite and jump for joy! Even drill bits from power drills or water jet cutters fail when they meet the tiny spheres inside the material. The best thing about Proteus is it can be custom made for different uses, ranging from bike locks of course, to full blown security doors or protective clothing.
