RentAFriend – need some company, rent it

two-friends

Ever had to go somewhere new by yourself? Wish you had a friend to bring along for company? If you’ve ever been in that situation and didn’t have anyone to call, check out RentAFriend, the website that lets you rent company.

Friends upload profiles so you can pick a person that suits your needs. Need a walking buddy or a someone who can teach you knitting? You can probably find them on this website. Each profile has a set hourly price and you just contact whoever seems interesting to set a date.

This is NOT a dating site or anything of that nature. This is for platonic friendships only. Like, looking for a poker buddy or someone to go to concerts with. That being said, if you paid them, they’re not really your “friend” so the concept is a bit strange. It should really be called RentACompanion but friend does sound more, well, friendly. Signing up to be a friend is free and you keep all the money you make. Signing up to rent is $24.95

  • These things almost always denigrate into something uglier, I’m saddened to say. I don’t like the rent-a-friend idea but like the concept. Prefer an approach that puts people on equal footing. That is… finding real people with whom to bond with based on related interests. Maybe it’s just bird-watching or tennis or shop-talk, etc.

Friendships area a tall order (and very needy) but connecting based on specific interests seems much more doable online and among complete strangers.

    • Websites like meetup where people can join groups do just the thing you’re looking for. Check that one out, it’s free to join and use.
