Return of the Ospreys – the reduction of pesticides brings this bird back from the brink

It’s hard to really notice how much difference our efforts make towards a cleaner and more sustainable planet. This is especially true if they happen over a long time. It’s easy to forget what things were like when they were “bad”. Still, there are little reminders how of how much the work of environmentalism is making things better, like in this lovely tale of sighting an osprey.

The osprey is a bird that lives in Maryland and many other places around the world. Their numbers were severely impacted by pesticide use in the 70s. So much so that spotting one was a rare event. After stricter controls on pesticides, the ospreys made a comeback going from a rare site to everywhere over a period of fifty years.

This is amazing! It’s also an example of how our actions impact the world and how long it takes for the environment to heal. It may not seem like efforts for sustainability do much in your day to day but they have a rippling impact all around you.
