Remember that old saying? The one that goes, give a man a fish and you feed him for a day…give him a fishing net and you give him 1 billion page views a month? Yeah that one.

Well nowhere could it be more aptly demonstrated than with the Roblox game site…or more correctly game universe. Imagine, if you will, taking all the immersive power of the massively powerful Minecraft game and wrapping it in a DIY game making, social network, club type environment.

Throw in a full chat function, a robust virtual economy and the ability to nurture large scale multiplayer gaming and you’ve got a phenomenon which generates a mind boggling 29 million game hours every month. If you want to see just how addictive the game is, try signing up for the free service and see what we mean.

There are hundreds of user created games on offer, in 14 genres, ranging from Sci-Fi to Comedy. They all use the same game engine of course, so most of the games follow the same block-like formula, but within those constraints you have a multitude of game experiences. There’s even a Minecraft clone available.

As with all of the modern online multiplayer games, there are ample chances for you to spend your money on everything from merchandise to tools and in-game experience, but the incredibly clever part is the fact that you can’t buy Robux, as the currency is called, with credit card or Paypal, you have to obtain coupons from real world stores and places that supply mobile phone top-up coupons.

There are, however, more conventional monthly subscription plans which offer more features and opportunities, but we were impressed by how much fun you can get out of playing the freebie version. There seems to be no real throttling of enjoyment just because you haven’t paid any cash. And as with any virtual world, there are opportunities to earn revenue of some sort from a game you’ve made if it’s successful.

If you’re one of those who really enjoys making your own universe, and especially if there’s a group of you who can pull together to create your own fun game, then this could be an excellent toy to play with. Amazingly addictive fun on so many levels!
