Seaweed and Plastic Shoes – inventor makes eco-friendly shoes from waste

When you think of shoes, you probably think of leather and or rubber. That and cloth is what they’re mostly made from. But they don’t have to be. One inventor has developed a recyclable sports shoe that’s made from plastic bottles and, of all things, seaweed.

The shoe was developed by Jorge Castro Ramos, a Mexican inventor, who had manged to refine waste plastic into durable fiber but it wasn’t quite right for the soles. He stumbled upon the idea of using sargassum seaweed This type of seaweed is not picturesque, threatens coral reefs, and on shore smells to high heaves as it rots. So really, using it to make footwear solves two problems.

The end result is a light weight shoe that can be worn for about two years before it’s all worn out. When it has reached the end of its life cycle, it can be returned to the company to be recycled thus keeping them out of landfills. An awesome innovation!
