So you think your data’s safe eh? Got RAID equipped hard drives? Got sequential backup of your important stuff? Ok, so what if there’s a fire and it’s all destroyed? Have you got an offsite backup? Well don’t worry, Think Geek has got you covered with the SentrySafe Fireproof Databox … but before you click off thinking it’s just another fireproof bitbox, read on.

As well as being able to hold 60 CDs or DVDs, having a 30 minute fireproof rating and being waterproof, the SentrySafe has one more trick up it’s tumbler. At the bottom of the safe is a USB connection pass-through. So not only can it safely store your data, but you can leave your hard drives in the safe and still use them. Solid.

Even if your data wasn’t touched by flame, the water used to protect your home could damage your data. Those memories are precious and irreplaceable. Protect those files from theft, fire and water damage with this digital safe. Not only is it a rock-solid lockbox, hardened against blistering heat and corrosive water, it has a USB connection on the inside of the case. Plug your USB hard-drive into this internal connection and connect the safe itself to your computer.

  • Before you consider this a viable alterntive to offsite backup, I would consider whether a 30 minute fireproof rating will be long enough to get the fire extinquished. I also would question how long a running hard drive would last inside a box. So you have to be thinking solid state drive (very expensive thus far) or disconnecting the drive from the computer when you aren’t actually backing up. And of course, it will also need to be one that does not require a separate power source.

So perhaps this is something to consider for your home, but I certainly wouldn’t trust my critical business data to this safe. A true remote backup service is definitely the way to go if you are serious about protecting your data.

  • Personally I think the USB port is a very innovative idea. And personal use is just what I would keep it’s use for. Maybe keep just important backups on a thumb drive – passwords, policy number and phone number to the insurance company and the like.

  • Yes, I believe you’re both right and Linda I would say this is definitely for household use only. The thing is, stuff is only safe in a safe, it it’s in the safe, which is why the USB pass through is so good. Your hard drives can stay in place.

  • Well I hang my hard disk out the window on a piece of string. With a knot. I sleep well nowadays.
