Shield Attack – you, your PC and your phone against the aliens [Freeware]

The Nintendo Wii started the mass market trend for innovative controllers on console games, followed by the Microsoft Kinect system, and ever since then companies have been falling over themselves to deliver cool new ways to control and play games. But if you’re not a console person, you may have felt left out. Until now.

Shield Attack is an interesting new browser based computer game which combines the power graphics of a computer with the controller action of a smartphone. Install the free app on your iPhone or Android handset, fire up the game on your computer and you can defeat the alien monsters by flick gestures on your phone touchscreen, or by ‘throwing’ projectiles with your hand motion.

It’s very clever, and rather good fun, especially since there’s a multiplayer option for those of you with friends who are time-wasters and possess a compatible phone. What’s really clever of course, is the fact that all this jollity is possible through the use of very advanced back-end tech, including HTML5 and the Unity game platform. For the rest of us, it’s all about flinging those frisbees.
