Signal – edit your inbox and turn your email messages into a useful To-Do list [Freeware]

For many people email is more than just a communication tool, it’s actually a whole way of life. If you’re like me, you’ll use your email inbox as a reminder service, to-do list, activity archive and more, and after a while it becomes a core part of your daily routine. However most of the contents of my messages are irrelevant to my needs, so what would be cool would be a way to distil messages down to the core to make them easier to scan.

This is what Signal aims to do. This free Chrome browser plugin lets you trim your Gmail email messages to leave exactly the information you need to see, both in the subject line and main contents.

The result is an easy to scan inbox which conveys all the important information you need without having to open the message at all. It’s a clever idea and one that Google should definitely consider as a default lab option for the future.

At the moment the editing all needs to be done manually, but the developers are apparently planning to implement some form of automatic formatting function for things like incoming notification emails (e.g. shipping notices, flight details etc). It’s a very cool tool, and if you’re an email addict, this is definitely something you should check out. Shame there’s no Firefox version though.
