Smart String is the tape measure, evolved

If you need to measure something that’s longer than a yard, there’s really only one tool to reach for. I’m talking about a tape measure. It’s small, and can reach great lengths. However, there might actually be something better out there to perform measurements both long and short. Behold the Smart String.

Rather than relying on metal tape, this device uses string. The benefit here is that you can measure curved objects accurately, and you can store a greater length in a smaller package. The Smart String can measure up to 50′ and is small enough to slip into your pocket. What’s more is that it will display the exact measurement out to 3 decimal places, and store up to three measurements for later retrieval. If that weren’t enough, there’s also a calculator, level and flashlight built in. At $12, everyone should have one in their toolbox.

  • At first, this sounded great since you mention it is 50' of string. It is actually 50" of string. Quite a difference. If this thing had even 15 feet, it would be way more useful. At 50" or a little over 4 feet, the usefulness of this device is, well…meh.

  • How easy its it to fix the string to the thing you want to measure? A normal tape has that right angel tip thing that you hook around the thing you want to measure. in the picture this thing has a loop
