Snap Pets – hands on with a cute cuddly selfie and spy cam [First Looks]

Love ’em or loathe ’em, it looks as though selfies – taking photos of yourself in interesting locations – are here to stay for the long term. It’s not that they’re particularly interesting, it’s just that they’re really fun to do, especially with your friends and family. Lots of grinning involved.

Now there’s a new camera designed especially for selfies which looks like a lot of fun. The Snap Pets camera, from WowWee is a tiny cute VGA camera which connects to any smartphone via Bluetooth to deliver all sorts of photographic options. Not only is it a standalone camera which can store 20 shots on-board, or transmit them directly to the nearby phone, but it also can act as a remote shutter trigger, so you can place the camera on a shelf and shoot all your friends and you in a group. A groupsie, if you will.

The prototype we played with in the video below worked well, although the transmission speeds were a little slow, but the shots looked pretty good, and it definitely wins in the colorful ‘aww’ stakes. The other cool bit is you can set it up as a spy cam, by using the phone to tell it to take a photo every 5 minutes or whatever. Sneaky!

The product also comes with a neat little app which you can use to annotate and customize your photos, giving them that cute (there’s that word again) look which only pre-teens can really love. The camera is due out in the Spring at a price of around $29.99.
