SnowBoogie Fantom X is an expensive sled with steering capabilities

Sledding is a fairly simple activity. You get yourself a cheap sled, haul it to the top of a hill, then slide down on it. Rinse, repeat. The problem arises when you’re halfway down that hill, only to realize that you’re headed straight for a tree. Do you bail out? Do you lean hard to one side, and hope the sled veers to the right? If you’re in the SnowBoogie Fantom X, you just turn the handles.

This sled looks a lot like a stretcher with a pair of handlebars attached to it. in a way, it sort of is. The stretcher part is suspended above two rails, which are controlled by the handles. Turning them shifts the rails, thus allowing you to steer if needed. While the thought of steering is cool, after looking at the $157 price, I remember that the best way to sled is by going down the same path time and again to pack it down. You won’t get that with this expensive contraption.

  • You know, all to well, that with this sled; "having the ability to supposedly steer it", there's going to be a VERY GOOD REASON that it also "resembles a stretcher"!?!

  • "Hey, Man! So WHAT, if there's that 37" thick tree right in the middle of this run! We have…….STEERING!!
    Yipeeeee!!! Let's go! "Oh, CRAAAAAAAAAAAP!

  • Here we got expensive sleds with steering since at least 30 years.

You don’t have those? (Yes, you can get spare parts for those when you crashed into a tree or in other way broke parts of the sled.)

  • If you want to test out the sled, you can check out http://tobogganhills.com/ for a map of local hills. The site includes ratings for steepness, obstructions, popularity, and parking. Happy sledding! :)
