Solutum – this isn’t plastic but it sure looks like it!

Plastic is a huge problem. We use so much of it! And it sticks around forever. In landfills, blowing through the nature and into our waterways. Wouldn’t it be great if it could just. . . dissolve? Well that’s what Solutum has claimed to develop, a plastic that dissolves, safely, in water.

This isn’t the first product like this. We’ve seen others and they’re even on the market! Perhaps you’ve picked up a biodegradable bag from a green grocer. This is the first I’ve seen that has been clear though. The claim is that it can be used for food covering, bags, and bottles.

It dissolves in water in seconds which is great! But that begs the question, how would it be used to cover food or in bottles? Wouldn’t it start to break down once faced with moisture? Still, as a solution for bags and other disposable products, it may have some merit.
