Sony DSC-QX10 Lens – turns your smartphone into an instant DSLR

sonydscqxlens

Word has it that Sony is about to release a couple of truly innovative products which will transform your humble smartphone camera into a full blown all-glory DSLR. The two ‘lens cameras‘, which sport the DSC-QX brand name, will have built in sensors, a Bionz processor and WiFi/NFC connectivity which is how they will communicate with the phone.

What this means is the lenses will basically contain all the camera goodness you need to produce great shots, with all the control being done by smartphone software, which we assume will be a free app. Now if that’s not a great idea, we don’t know what is.

Apparently these devices will attach to your phone magnetically and will work with both iPhone and Android handsets, and there will be two variants, the QX10 and QX100. The latter will sport a Zeiss lens while the smaller model will come with a 10x zoom lens and 18 megapixel sensor. Details are a little sketchy at the moment, but if these products come in at the right price, we can see this spawning a whole new high end market for optical upgrades of standard smartphone cameras.

Whether people will willingly devote their pocket space to an add-on like this is really an interesting question, but when you think about it, the marriage between top quality imaging and smartphones is a logical one, and the idea of using add-ons makes the whole thing even more appealing. Why bother carrying around a compact DSLR when you can just use its lens?

Anyway, as we say, the proof will be in the pricing. But one thing’s for certain, this is going to be an interesting new accessory product type whatever happens. Expect copycats soon.
