Spinlister – free app service turns your neglected bike into rental cash

Hands up if you’ve got a bicycle lying around in a shed or hallway somewhere which you haven’t used for months? Or what about those of you who’re visiting friends and would love to join them on a weekend bike ride but don’t know how to get hold of a bike easily? Sound familiar? Those are the kinds of reasons that caused Spinlister, an online rental app and service for bikes and surfboards, to happen.

Many of the larger cities have bike and even car share systems in place, but not every city is lucky enough to be so progressive. Enter Spinlister. This app is a community of folks looking to rent their bikes, snowboards, and surfboards to folks in need. It’s all very easy to use, based around phone apps (of course) and each transaction is heavily insured to give peace of mind to the item owners. There’s also the usual community verification you’d expect, like with AirBnB, to make sure things stay happy and stress free.

Putting a bike on the system is just a matter of registering (preferably with Facebook, Twitter and other identity backups) and adding your ride and preferred price. Then anyone can search for your bike (or surfboard etc) in the area and make an offer. There’s a chat function embedded in the app, and all the money stuff is handled up front by Spinlister (so no embarrassing hassles asking for cash). It’s free to list a bike, you choose the rental price and the company takes 17.5% off every rental. Genius.

This is one of the growing list of online/app marketplaces that really make sense, and we can see this idea really spreading like wildfire. The service already operates in 55 countries, and because each bike is insured up to $10,000 against loss or theft, it really does look like a winner. The Spinlister app is available in both the App Store and Google Play, and there’s also a desktop version available.
