Spring Clean on Mount Everest – Cleaning out the attic in the roof of the world

Mount Everest is getting a spring clean. It’s been 57 years since it was first conquered and the 4000-odd people who have climbed it since have a left an ever-increasing volume of rubbish, including air cylinders, abandoned tents and even the bodies of dead climbers which cannot decompose in the harsh environment. The trip is being being organised by a group of Nepal’s best climbers who are hoping to bring down 2 tonnes of rubbish, 15kg at a time. Nepal’s prime minister is supporting the drive and they’re hoping to raise the US$225,000 to fund the expedition.
