StarPath – cool new spray-on glow surface is pretty, but probably won’t replace streetlights just yet

ProTeq Lighting has developed what it calls Starpath, a new spray on glowing surface coating which they hope will help reduce energy costs for city councils everywhere. The Starpath surface absorb UV light during the day and then glows after the sun goes down.

The effect is certainly dramatic and, according to reports, is quick and easy to apply. A patented spray is applied to surfaces and dries in a matter of hours.

Although it may be helpful in some areas, it is difficult to imagine it actually replacing street lights and other forms of illumination, and it is not immediately clear how this would work if there was snow on the ground, or other adverse weather conditions. It also doesn’t appear to produce the same amount of illumination that a street light would.

I’m also not sure how many people would be comfortable with the entire road outside their home glowing all night long. It looks to be a useful invention and hats off to them for doing it without using any power at all, however the areas where it can be used might be somewhat limited.
