The Future Needs Better Batteries – storing renewable energy is the next hurdle

Using power efficiently isn’t all about just using renewable sources, we also need better ways to store that power, on a large scale. A future that relies on renewable energy is a future that calls for better power storage to utilize it and right now, we’re mostly relying on decades old technology.

Personal batteries for trapping the gains from renewables like solar are on the rise with major companies introducing prototypes with the idea that they will hopefully become standard in homes in the future. But when it comes to large scale storage, we’re still using a lot of the same tactics.

These storage practices just aren’t suited for a greener world. Both molten salt electrolyte batteries and reservoirs have drawbacks. Salt batteries have short usage times and result in energy loss to use and reservoirs rely on water and, well, climate change is real. In order to get the most out renewable power, we have to come up with a better way to store it.
