The Ocean Cleanup – the set it and forget it way to clean up the Earth’s oceans

The Ocean Cleanup final

The ocean is sort of a large part of our planet and we’ve spent a good deal of time just filling it all up with garbage. We’ve realized the error of our ways and we’re trying to fix it. The Ocean Cleanup is a largescale project that wants to use the ocean to . . clean the ocean.

This is a passive system that basically uses the earth’s currents to drive the plastic waste into a man made coast line so that it can be collected and properly disposed of. The whole shebang is powered by the ocean itself. The coast is made of a solid barrier that stops the plastic that floats on the top but lets sea life pass safely underneath.

The Ocean Cleanup wall

This ecofriendly way of cleaning the oceans was purposed by a teenager and now it will finally see some real life work. It’s not fast, our oceans won’t be clean by next summer but with constant use over the next decade, we can see a decrease in floating waste by 50%. Maybe combined with better waste practices and more sustainable lifestyles we can get closer to 100% in 20 years. Check out the website for more information.
