Everyone lends other people books, it’s what makes them so social. I have purchased three copies of Cryptonomicon yet I only own one copy, I just keep giving them away. The 1 Dollar Book Company thinks this might be a neat idea and they have created a kind of Tupperware party plan around referring ebooks.
The idea is you first buy an ebook for $1. You then refer the book to friends, as many as you like obviously, and for each referral that turns into a sale you will earn 10 cents commission. It doesn’t sound like much, but the commission runs 8 people-deep, so you’ll keep earning money down the line even if you referred it to someone who referred it to someone who referred it to someone who bought it.
There are a couple of problems as I see it, first ebooks just aren’t that prevalent at the moment so you’re limited as to who you can refer to, it’s probably no good referring ebooks to Grandma. The second issue is you can’t just choose any book and there aren’t many ebooks to choose from. But, give them time to get their selection together and see what comes of it and if they can extend it to real books then this kind of thing might be a real goer. One to keep an eye methinks.
