The Problem of Plastic E-Waste – surprisingly little device waste has been recycled

We’ve talked about e-waste in the past. It’s one of the modern world’s growing issues as very little of it is recycled and much of it is plastic. Moving forward, corporations need to be mindful in providing avenues in which old devices and components can be easily recycled.

There is an e-waste industry, of sorts. Although there are some companies that operate with the sole goal of tackling this particular problem, much of the work is done by people in Asia and Africa on products that they’ve sorted from the garbage, not shipped over in sorted barges and is completely unregulated. This exposes workers to a host of hazards.

Using recycled plastics in electronic products would help to reduce some of this waste. Also making electronics that can be upgraded easily to extend their shelf life would likely also help a great deal.
