This Tree Tweets – scientists hook a tree up with sensors to track reaction to change

Trees can’t talk to us which is a shame because they could probably tell us a lot about our changing world. After all, they’ve been around for a very, very long time. Somebody else thought about that too and thanks to technology, gave one tree a way to “talk” to us, no Lorax needed. A northern red oak has been outfitted with sensors and its observations are tweeted.

The tree is the largest in its area and boasts that it is one of the oldest living things in the world. The sensors monitor many things, heat, humidity, soil, air pressure, etc to see how the tree is handling these environmental factors.

We think of trees as stoic things, they’re trees, but they do actually react to things around them. By monitoring the environment through the tree, scientists are hoping to foster a better relationship between people and nature as well as get some in depth looks at how nature handles changes.
