Tonido – the brave little desktop that could…

Tonido is a fascinating example of a well thought out product which could have its work cut out gaining exposure and market success. This freeware desktop environment is multi-platform (Linux, Windows and Mac), nicely designed and offers an innovative shell from which to access your data and multimedia. The key to the whole thing is the TonidoPlug which is a $100 plugin hardware dongle which hooks up to your router and gives you instant access to all your computer files over the Internet via any web browser.

The package ships with a small set of applications like a file browser, music player, a blog and a BitTorrent client, all of which are pretty looking and feature full. My hesitation comes from one specific question. Who’s going to want to use this? Do people really want to view their photos from a remote computer? Or access their MP3 music? If so, aren’t they more likely to be geek types with the ability to set up their own VPN?

Hey it’s not a given, and maybe I’m being churlish. The Tonido development tech is open source, so it’s on the side of the angels and that in itself should help with gaining more market traction, but still… Anyway I wish them well with this, it may be ambitious but it’s well crafted and deserves to find a happy niche.

Tonido is an extensible personal web application development platform, that offers an array of applications including Photos, Jukebox, Webshare, and Workspace to make your digital life better and safer. Since applications and data are always local, your private data never has to reside on a third-party server and is available to you anytime: both offline and online. Tonido applications are served right from your own desktop by the built-in webserver and allows easy access from any device with a web browser.
