With all the new architectural wonders springing from the drawing board to reality these days, is it so difficult to imagine a house that can transform itself to fit a variety of configurations? Seems that the D’Dynamic – a house that can fold itself into eight different configurations – could bring this idea to reality.

This building’s distinctive design is based on the Haberdasher’s Puzzle, discovered by English mathematician Henry Dudeney, which allows an equilateral triangle that’s cut into four parts to be folded into a square while all pieces remain in contact with at least one other piece. The idea allows a house to respond to its environment, adapting by being reconfigured to meet seasonal and meteorological conditions as needed. The house will be able to change shape as well as direction. It could face east to meet the sunrise in summertime with incorporate glazed panels, or reconfigure and replace these panels with thick insulating walls and a different orientation for winter months. Tracks embedded in the ground facility the reconfigurations with hinges connecting various sections of the house.

Although a full-scale working D*Dynamic has yet to be built, a working model is on display at the Anise Gallery in London. It boggles the mind to imagine living in such a futuristic type of home but imagine the fun possibilities!
