Forget about all those nancy fitness apps, they’re just toys designed for wannabes. What you really need if you want to get fit and stay healthy is a real live personal trainer. Someone who cajoles, insults and goads you to improve, even on those days when it’s the last thing you need. But the problem is they’re expensive and not always available at the times you want, which makes them a bit of a luxury for most people.
But now there’s another option you can try, with this new truTrainer app and service, which aims to combine the best of both worlds by offering users a customized training program created by a real person, along with always available workout plans stored on your smartphone.
The idea is to make use of the ‘down-time’ which all trainers have when they’re not with their clients, to offer their services remotely to users of the app. It’s a clever idea all right, especially since the app also provides a messaging feature so you can contact your trainer while you’re in the gym to ask advice about your workout.
The app also does the conventional stuff like tracking progress and personal stats, and each client has to fill out a comprehensive ‘interview’ to start with, to ensure they receive the optimum fitness program from the outset. And your trainer can access your progress and make adjustments as you progress to ensure you’re getting the best from your efforts. And also keep you motivated of course!
The app, available only for the iPhone at the moment, is free, the monthly fee for the training service is $24.99 and you can select which trainer you wish to use from a list on the phone when you sign up. Sounds like an interesting development and one worth watching. We wonder whether this approach could be used with any other services of this sort?
