Turn your old paperback books in to a room divider

Here’s a fun fact for you. Apparently there is no good way to recycle the paper from paperback books. They use low-quality paper, and in order to do anything with them, they have to go through the process of removing the glue from the spine. Thus, nearly all paperback books will eventually end up in a dump somewhere. Sure, when we get rid of books, we like to donate them to Goodwill, or even a school. However, why not actually put those old books to use doing something constructive around your house?

One of the coolest uses I’ve ever seen for old books is to turn them into a room divider. If you stack a bunch of books together tightly, you’ll find that they absorb a lot of sound, and, if you’re blocking off an entire room, you’ll find that they are a good form of heat insulation. There are a few good project ideas for building your own partition over at the London Design Studio website.

  • Notice how all the books' edges are all trimmed and lined up perfectly. Either the books just happen to be exactly the very same size, or, the other side of the wall looks like crap. Plus, all it would take is a little tap in the middle of the wall and you'd have a whole lot of picking up to do. Just get some 2'' x 4''s and some wallboard and be done with it. Designers! – I've s–t 'em.

  • Also if you go to the site they show a smaller "partition" made of books on a shelf….. When I was younger, we used to call that a bookcase.
