Upcoming app will help you count calories by taking pictures of your food

Watching what you eat isn’t always the easiest of tasks. Let’s say you’re having dinner at a friend’s house, and you want to know how many calories are in the dish they prepared. Unless your friend is also counting calories, they probably aren’t going to know right off the top of their head. Well NTT Docomo is working on an app for smartphones and tablets that will help solve your problem, by having you take pictures of your food.

The new app has you take a picture of the dish you’re about to eat, and from that, it will try to guess what it is you’re eating. Select the correct name, and it will give you all of the necessary health facts about the meal. You can then mark the food as eaten, which will record the calorie intake for later. You can even enter your body weight, which will allow the software to calculate further information about the food’s effect on your body. No word yet on when this will be released.

  • I can remember looking very confused when confronted by a Japanese picture menu when working in Japan. Because the photo may look like European food it does not mean what you get is what you thought you saw. Is there a country setting??

  • Great for diabetics!
