Walking is always better when you have somewhere to go. Especially if it’s a hot day, or you’re hungry, or you know, the internet. Having a destination in mind makes walking seem more like a good idea. Virtual Walk is an app for Android and iOS that lets you plan your walking route, and at the same time turn the act of working out into a game.
Virtual Walk is an app for mobile devices. Unlike many apps that show you around town, this one lets you plan your route in advance. Which is great, especially if you want hit certain places on the way (practical, like the dry cleaners or impractical like the pet store when you know your lease says no dogs) so you can complete tasks while exploring. Or you can set this on treadmill mode and just explore the world without leaving your house.
What really makes this fun is the fact that the app, instead of just allowing you to check out a place in advance, locks the locations until you reach them. So you can’t just go read the card for the Arc de Triumph, you have to actually reach the location in real life, or reach the required mileage on your treadmill first. It’s a game and a workout all rolled into one package. Neat.
Virtual Walk is free through the App Store and Google Play.
