Want cream with that…?

Hmmm, a new Netflix type service is just starting up in the UK. The ScreenSelect service has 12,500 movie titles (Netflix has 15,000), and for 14.99 a month you get to keep three at a time for as long as you like. Send one or more back when you want new titles to watch.

I smell a Starbucks play. What do I mean? Werll, there was a couple who started up a coffee shop chain in the UK a while ago called The Seattle Coffee Company. They ran successfully for a while and then magically were bought out in 1998 for $20 million by the big boss from Seattle itself.

Is it a coincidence that hugely successful pioneer Netflix has not arrived here in the UK yet? Or that ‘suddenly’ there’s a veritable rash of unlimited DVD rental operations starting up? See how close the Video Island, DVDtoHome and ScreenSelect front pages are to Netflix? (Hint: Here’s how it works!)

Other UK services – DVDtoHome, MovieTrak, Webflix, DVDsontap and of course Video Island.

Oh and by the way, what makes ScreenSelect different is that it’s headed up by the ex founder of Amazon.co.uk. Oh and netflix.co.uk is currently owned by one William Marshall and is conveniently detagged.

Any bets?
