Water and Cattle – beef production uses major water but not how you think

If you care about the environment you have likely lowered if not all together ended eating beef. It’s been well publicized that beef production is at the root of many environmental issues but one that is often overlooked is the water shortages it causes. Watering crops for cattle consumption is really sucking US rivers dry.

Turns out making sure cattle eats (so we can eat them) is causing rivers to run a lot lower than they should. We are using the water to irrigate crops for their consumption. Water is already at a premium in many places and a new study is suggesting that we’re using about 32% of water just to grow crops for cattle. This is especially devastating in western rivers.

Although at one point in time it may have been different, this practice is far from sustainable now. So if you needed another reason to cut down on beef, think of the water usage that burger is pulling.
