Whenever we talk about CO2, it’s about how there’s too much in the atmosphere which is true but we also need it. Turns out it’s an important part of our food industry and with coronavirus shutting down factories, we’re running out.
It’s not just the virus, it was also some choices made over the summer when no one could have predicted what 2020 had in store for us. We use the carbon dioxide as part of the water treatment process for drinking water as well as various food processes.
Plants that rely on the gas for production are only receiving 33% of their needed amount. If the shortage goes on, experts believe that the US food availability will be impacted. The call is for ethanol plants, who would normal supply the CO2, to reopen to avoid this issue.
