World TV – superb idea brings together video content and user creativity

World TV. Register and you can set up your own television channel, comprised of whatever video clips you want from around the web’s main video sites like YouTube, Metacafe, iFilm, AOL and the like. I have to say I love the idea and the implementation.

The concept of pulling in videos onto your own space (you get a simple channel URL as part of the sign up) and wrapping it all in a super friendly skin is great. Sure it’s not revolutionary, but the simplicity of setting up your own channel really works, and it’s bound to encourage and help people build a video fan base quickly and easily. Check out my NigeTV demo for an idea of what to expect, it was put together in about 2 minutes (yeah yeah, enough of the insults already).

The facility to record your own video clips using your webcam is also excellent, and again it’s all designed to be incredibly easy to do. Sure the interface still needs a bit of work, for instance there’s no real structure to the catalogue page (which could probably do with a bit more of a granular categorisation) but for a new service the whole thing works brilliantly!

Our goal is to build the very first global amateur television channel network, featuring full screen channels created by people from all over the World. Thousands of people from all different backgrounds and from all walks of life will participate. You can be a part of it… This Manifesto was originally written in 1998 but has been revised and updated to reflect current times. * WorldTV will build a major global television network featuring amateur channel editors and up-and-coming content creators * Our aim is to empower anyone who has ever wanted to work in broadcasting, who has wanted access to the same tools as television, or has good ideas for television content and wants to distribute them widely, to achieve their goal. * We will provide a framework within which individuals can expand their skills, and a platform from which people can develop their talent. We will provide imaginative projects which people can get involved in, and professional tools with which to implement them.
