Would being paid for each visit make you more likely to hit the gym?

If you work a job that requires you to sit at a desk for the better part of your day, getting down to the gym is generally a good idea. Whether you want to tone up or shed a few pounds, you’ll find everything you need to get a proper workout there. So why do so many people (myself included) find it so hard to make it there on a regular basis? Sometimes it seems like no matter what you try, you just can’t motivate yourself to drive there and spend an hour working out. Well what if you were rewarded every time you went and exercised, would that be enough motivation?

The feeling you get when you’ve spent a good hour or so working out should be reward enough, however, GymPact wants to give you cold hard cash for doing so. That’s right, just download their free iPhone app and tell it how often you’re going to work out. Then check in at the gym on the days you specified, and you’ll get paid. Of course, there is a catch. Each time you schedule a day to go, and fail to show up, you’ll lose money. This amount can be set by you, so you won’t lose too much. But even a few bucks per missed session can add up of you make it a habit. The money pulled from people who failed to keep to their schedule is pooled at the end of each week and distributed to the people who did. It’s an interesting concept, though I wonder if it will catch on.

  • It's a great concept! The only obstacle for people who want to join this app is the requirement of a creditcardnumber. I don't think people like to give their creditcardnumber to use this app.

  • Nice app and cool integration with RunKeeper!
