WPS Office – the best darn Android office suite around [Freeware]

It’s a fact that the more powerful these darn smartphones become, the more tempting it is to use them for more adventurous stuff. Like… oh you know, navigating around. But more seriously, the power of modern phones is also just perfect for doing real office type work, but they’ve been held back until now by sub-standard software. No longer. Welcome WPS Office.

We’ve been using this super cool little office suite for a year or so now, and it’s a delight. For one thing it’s completely cross platform, Android, iOS, Windows and even Linux. There are two things that make it really stand out. For one, it just works. Now if you’ve ever tried to open a PDF document or a spreadsheet on your phone, you’ll probably know about the pain. Bad formatting, sketchy navigation menus, etc etc.

With WPS Office, it just opens. It means you can relax if you need to download and read something in a hurry, as we discovered when trying and failing to open numerous PDF files in other apps. WPS Office copes with all the different formatting and layouts like a charm.

The second thing that’s really cool is the super simple user interface. Yeah this sounds like an advert, but the choice of other tools out there for editing office files is truly pitiful, so it’s great to find a standout product which does what it should do. We’ve had apps which were so cumbersome they make WordStar look like a paragon of user delight (if you don’t know what WordStar is, ask your dad).

Anyhoo, long and short, if you need to do any serious office type work on your tablet or phone, we heartily recommend this suite. It comprises a word-processor, spreadsheet and presentation tools, all fully compatible with MS Office (!), with remote file access over the cloud, and support for wireless printing. And the blooming stuff is free. Ridiculous. Anyway, grab it, you won’t regret it. Recommended.
