Yerka – the bicycle that can’t be stolen? Mmm…

yerka

Hmm…some enterprising Chilean engineering students have come up with a bike design they say makes it theft proof. They actually use the word ‘unstealable‘, but we’re not sure it actually exists. Anyhoo, the Yerka project looks pretty clever all right, although we do have a couple of questions.

The bicycle certainly looks nice to ride, and while it may not win any artistic awards, it looks practical enough to use on a daily basis, which is a big improvement on most concept bikes we’ve seen which look pretty weird. And the idea of using the frame of the bicycle as the locking mechanism is also very clever, the idea being if you break the frame you break the bike. Hence no point in stealing.

Of course, as a few commenters have pointed out, one of the first things to get stolen on a bike are the wheels, which will make this project less than ideal unless they can solve that problem in an elegant way. And while it’s great not to have to carry around a bulky lock and/or chain, we’re wondering how strong the seat post is, and whether it will prove enough of a deterrent to a thief with a saw or set of bolt croppers? The project awaits production. [Via]
