MyGazines – upload, share and archive your favourite magazine articles…for free

Mygazines dot com is an interesting new take on the social network theme based around magazines. The idea is to build a community around shared interests via uploaded magazine articles. It’s a clever idea and the interface actually works, which is a bonus in itself. The first time I looked at the site it was stuffed with glossy full content uploads of major name titles, but it looks as though the copyright cops have swept through the site since then, as now there are far fewer mainstream mags and a lot more wannabes.

You can search the content for mag or article keywords, or via a comprehensive set of genres, and you can browse the actual articles using a very passable online reader which is far more sophisticated than a conventional PDF page turner interface (the auto-page flipper is very cool tech for example). Articles can be rated, shared, tagged, bookmarked and emailed to a friend, so this is a good way for budding magazine publishers to get good printed content out to the world.

The ultimate idea of the site is for subscribers to build up a personal library of articles they’re interested in using their Mygazines storage area, which can be indexed according to your taste. It’s a nice idea, and with the right quality and quantity of content is a valuable way to maintain a link between print and web content in a useful and accessible way. Just think how useful it would be to be able to scan, upload and store recipes from your favourite magazines. The problem is, of course, that most of the best content is ferociously guarded by copyright Rottweillers, so you will only be able to scan your own content or stuff that small publishers agree to. At least for now. Nonetheless it’s a nice idea and one that deserves to grab an audience. One to watch.
