Solar Stik – the ultimate independent power station

Solarstik4

The Solar Stik portable solar array system looks pretty cool. It folds up into a set of smallish packages which are semi hand portable (100+ lbs) and can be erected in around 10 minutes. They’re pitching it against the standard portable petrol generator and their marketing demonstrates the low cost of running solar in comparison. The rig produces 100W of power, which is enough to run most small appliances provided you’ve got the sun, otherwise you might find yourself a little limited.

One of the cool things is you can daisy chain units together if you really need more power, and there’s a whole set of accessories available – including power packs to store the juice you harvest – which add to the product’s utility. Priced from around $5000.00 for the base unit, with a 25 year guarantee on the panels. [Via Gizmag]

What should I do in order to maintain my Solar Stik? In addition to regularly wiping the panel surfaces, we recommend periodic use of a silicone OR petroleum based corrosion-inhibitive lubricant on the Solar Stik. Application should be made primarily at joints, hinges, and base socket as these are the areas that have the most potential for corrosion or abrasion. Occasionally check to make sure the mechanical handles’ center screws are snug. Electrical connections should be checked on a regular basis to prevent corrosion and ensure good contact.
