Windows users just can’t get a break these days. Even before you turn your brand new machine on, chances are something is lurking.
Kapersky Labs reports that it recently purchased a brand-new M&A Companion Touch netbook for testing purposes. Turns out it came pre-configured with 3 different types of nasties, including a rootkit and an MMO password stealer, all for free. Delving into the restore logs they deduced the netbook had become infected after an employee helpfully updated some of its drivers using a dirty USB stick.
This kind of thing doesn’t happen very often but it’s just one more thing to consider when it comes time to get that new PC. If you listen to Ken Rockwell, he’s quite happy to tell you that using Windows is just like communism.
Nigel probably agrees.
