Have you ever tried to open an image that someone’s sent you, only to realize that it’s .psd file, and you don’t have Photoshop installed on your computer? It’s an expensive piece of software, so not everyone is going to have a copy. Well you’ll be happy to know that if this happens again, you can just turn to Google Docs.
That’s right, the search giant has announced support for .psd and 11 other file types. This is why I love Google so much. They take a real problem like not being able to open files without very specific software, and offer a simple solution for the masses. When such an attachment comes through your Gmail account, you can just click on the handy “view” link and have it open right up. Curious about the other file types supported? Here’s the list of the full dozen:
- Microsoft Excel (.XLS and .XLSX)
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 / 2010 (.PPTX)
- Apple Pages (.PAGES)
- Adobe Illustrator (.AI)
- Adobe Photoshop (.PSD)
- Autodesk AutoCad (.DXF)
- Scalable Vector Graphics (.SVG)
- PostScript (.EPS, .PS)
- TrueType (.TTF)
- XML Paper Specification (.XPS)
