Turn an IKEA shelf into a wall-mounted desk

Setting up your computer area can be a simple task, or a project that consumes a good bit of time. It mostly depends on how much you care about how the area looks when you’re finished. When I move, I’ll spend hours planning out where each piece of furniture will go, so as to maximize space and functionality. If you’re wanting to go for a minimalist look in your house, you might try this clever IKEA hack.

Shaun Bowman had been looking at some IKEA BEST BURS shelves, which are made to mount on the walls and hold DVDs. He noted the strength and durability of the shelving unit, and decided it would be perfect for his new desk. With that, he set to mount it to his wall, cut holes for cabling and set up his computer. In the end, he was left with a great minimalist desk with a fold-out keyboard tray. Not too shabby for a day’s work.

  • …looks great but what about heat dissipation? Bet that shelf would act like a mini oven.

  • ikea uses a system were you hit 1 stud and use a toggle in the other holes, unless you mount a furring strip on the inside and screw it to cabinet and wall
