Well it had to happen. We’ve got smartphones, smart cars, smart cards and now, thanks to the wonders of modern science and technology, we have a new addition to the genre –  smart bulbs. What does that mean? Well for one thing you’ll never have to worry about fiddling around trying to get your room lit properly again.

Just pair this new Insteon Networked LED Bulb up with your smartphone (iPhone or Android) and you can produce instant light at the touch of a button on your handset screen. No intermediate modules or connections needed. The bulb has its own dual band wireless tech built in, so it’s ready to control from up to 50 metres away. Not only that, but it comes with integrated non-volatile memory to store favorite settings, and you can dim the thing as well as switch it on and off. Are you impressed yet?

The 8 Watt (60W) LED bulb has a lifetime of 50,000 hours, and you can even network a bunch of them together and control them all with your phone or a special controller switch. If the idea of all this tech crammed into a humble light bulb is too much for you Mr Edison, how about the fact that you can also program the dim and illumination rates, link the bulb to computer controlled scenarios and set default brightness levels on power up. Mind boggling.

The price for all this awesomeness is a piffling $29.99, and due to huge demand there’s a limit of one bulb per customer, US only at the moment. Oh and don’t forget the product will save you money due to its lower power consumption vs conventional bulbs.

It 'smarts' if you unscrew it while hot.
