Zoom, zoom, zoom.

Got digital camera? Need zoom? Then try Zoom-X. £34.99. Hmm…I wonder how this puppy impacts on image quality?

‘This brilliant optical gadget gives any standard digital or 35mm compact a zoom lens that a tabloid paparazzi would give his right arm for. Zoom-X is an ingenious12x variable-focus mini zoom that locates securely in front of the camera’s own lens. As long as your camera’s got a threaded tripod hole underneath (and 99% do), the universal mount will fit! It even works with your camera’s existing zoom..’

‘Think your camera doesn’t get you close enough to the action? Then think again. This brilliant optical gadget gives any standard digital or 35mm compact a zoom lens that a tabloid paparazzi would give his right arm for. Zoom-X…

There’s just no way this is going to provide image quality close to that of native zooms. A semi-novel concept, but pretty high on the cheese factor.

  8. No Joke. You’ll probably get arrested because you look like you’re doing surveilance for a heist.

It seems like you would risk loosing a lot of light with this setup, and probably have some dimming near the edges of the frame, because the optics probably aren’t the absolute top of the line. If you want to get a similar effect, I’ve had some decent luck using binoculars held up to the lense with a brace that screws into the tripod mount. It’s pretty ridiculous looking, and incredibly unwieldly, but it gets the job done for the most part, and you can get pretty cheap binocs these days.

If you look closely at the picture, it appears to me that the optical portion is a monocular, complete with rubber armor.
I wonder how much it would cost to make your own?

It your tripod socket is not in-line with the lens it will be a hand-full as it would take the in line idea at a squew.. if you see what I mean!
