The mighty Google continues pushing the boundaries of email with its latest announcement of a new layout format trial for the Promotions tab. For those who don’t know this is the folder which collects all the ham (not spam), which we sign up for day to day. Things like newsletters, promotional material etc.
Now Google is going to test out whether we would prefer to see all these incoming email messages in a graphical format, which looks a little like Pinterest. The big colorful boxes in the new promotions tab will no doubt brighten up the inbox, but we’re not that sure it will speed up our reading, and make things more accessible.
The good news is you can switch between the old list view and this new Grid view at the touch of a button, so at least it’s not going to be all or nothing. We still haven’t really forgiven the Gmail team for removing the awesome message preview feature from Labs, so we’ll probably sit on the fence with this one for a while. We’ve signed up, so let’s see how it goes.
