We went to a small digital demo show last night and tucked away in the corner of the room was a little stand showing off these tiny gizmos. The PAWA Card is an ultra thin credit card sized charge block which comes with an integrated Lithium Polymer battery, and a very clever triple format connector.
It has a legacy Apple connector, a Lightning connector and microUSB, all on the single stalk. And on the other stalk is a standard USB plug. What this means is it can charge anything from an old iPhone through to a state of the art Samsung (see video below) as well as new generation Apple products with ease. Oh and it can also act as a data transfer cable between your computer and phone or tablet. Brilliant.
The tiny on-board battery only holds 500mAh worth of charge, but that’s definitely enough to give you emergency juice until you can get to a proper charge source, since it will probably charge up a smartphone by 30%. What’s more it only takes an hour to re-charge the little unit ready to go again.
The thing that really makes it stand out is the simple ergonomics. It’s neat and tidy, definitely thin enough to fit into a wallet, and it works brilliantly. Just slot it into your device, flick the on/off switch and the green light comes on to show it’s charging. That’s it.
Flick the switch the other way and you get a nice little free LED flashlight which is surprisingly bright, and again a useful little wallet tool to carry around with you. The whole thing weighs less than 30 grams, and has a battery lifecycle of around 500 charges, more than enough to keep it going for a few years.
We really like the whole design and idea behind carrying around something like this, and the fact that it can also act as a data synch cable is a bonus. Great little product. Recommended. Priced at £19.99.
