littleBits – open source maker kit promises a world of delight for wannabe nerds of any age

Making machines and projects out of various different objects is a pasttime that never gets old. But your creations generally don’t come with a huge selection of electronic components to choose from, nor do they snap together as easily as LEGO kits do. Until now.

littleBits is an open source library of electronics modules designed for children, young and old, who love making things. All kinds of things. Each adorably small circuit board has a pre-programed purpose which can include light, sound, buttons, motors, etc. The pieces cleverly use magnets to stay together, which means no soldering or wiring required. It’s all snap-on plug and play.

Which makes it a simple and easy set for younger children to get into. For more advanced users (see also: adults who are buying this “for their children“) they’ve introduced an Arduino set as well.

There are other electronic toy sets that are marketed to help foster a sense of creativity in children. What makes littleBits exciting is it’s built with combining in mind. Meaning it was made to be partnered with just about anything that is already in the home. There are three box sets available and each one is completely compatible with the others, meaning you can expand your collection of parts simply by purchasing the next set in the line.

littleBits Base kits are $99 a piece but that’s just the beginning. A fabulous fun tool for just about all ages.
