SeatyLock – the first really cool and workable new security device for bicycles we’ve seen

We hate promoting Kickstarter projects as you know, but this one deserves a bit of attention, because it looks like it could actually solve a big problem for bicycle riders across the world. The SeatyLock is what it says, a bike saddle which converts into a bike lock when you’re parked up. Now there have been a ton of crowdfunding attempts to improve the bike lock, and most of them have been patently rubbish. Not so this one.

What convinced us to feature a mid term project like this is the set of videos on the pitch page which show just how strong this lock is. From what we can see, the only thing that’s going to crack this lock in a reasonable amount of time is an angle-grinder on full alert, and as we all know, it’s kind of hard to look innocent as you fire up one of those to steal a bicycle, even in cynical New York.

There are a number of other reasons we’re championing this. First, the team already has a working product called the FoldyLock which was also crowdfunded and has been out on sale for almost a year, second, the team hails from New York (we all know how much they love their bike locks there), and finally the product actually looks extremely good and comes in two practical versions, one saddle option for comfort and one for speed. They’ve thought this through! See video below for toughness –

Of course if you’re in a very high risk area, it won’t hurt to add a secondary chain or some other mechanism to secure the other wheel, but for straightforward bike security alongside convenience, we really can’t see this being beat for the time being. Excellent, and available on pre-order for $85. Kickstarter pitch video below –
